Description
Metate Arch is located in Devil’s Garden, an outcrop of wind-blasted sandstone in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It was named for the smooth, concave rock tool that was used for millennia by Native peoples of the region to grind corn and seeds into flour. Ancient granaries and rock writing panels can still be found throughout this rich, cultural landscape.
