Description
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the largest national monument in the lower 48 states, much of it rugged and remote desert. The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.), with its thick, waxy flesh that stores water and spines that prevent damage from herbivores, is well-adapted to this dry environment. Its unprotected red fruits, however, provide food for wildlife and its showy flowers are favorites for bees and other insects.
