Stewardship
GSEP runs a hands-on stewardship program that engages volunteers in protecting and restoring Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.
In partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, we implement, manage, and evaluate this program using two evidence-based strategies:
(1) Hands-on stewardship projects that remediate visitor-impacted sites and improve recreation infrastructure through graffiti remediation, trash removal, campsite cleanup, and trail work.
(2) Visitor education through Trail Ambassadors, who promote sustainable visitation practices using Leave No Trace and Visit With Respect principles. This work results in reduced visitor impacts, restored and reclaimed landscapes, increased stewardship behaviors, and the long-term conservation of GSENM’s wilderness character.
