The public volunteer opportunities that are currently available are graffiti remediation and G.O.A.T – Goathead Obliteration and Annihilation Team. Graffiti remediation entails hiking along a popular trail in the Monument to remediate scratched in and drawn on graffiti using brushes and water.
The Goathead Obliteration and Annihilation Team will be going out to popular trails and trailheads on the Monument to pull and spray the invasive goathead plant that has been spreading rapidly throughout the region in recent years. There will be more events that become available to the public throughout the season that will include other stewardship related opportunities including campsite remediation, trail work, etc.
Upcoming Events
Our first volunteer event will be a 3 day project March 14th-16th to remediate a non-permitted two track out on Big Spencer Flat, which you can sign up for here.
Our first graffiti remediation event will be on April 30th, which you can sign up for here
Our first GOAT event will be July 30th, which you can sign up for here.
We will also be kicking off our new Trail Ambassador program this spring. Trail Ambassador volunteers are representatives of Grand Staircase Escalante Partners (GSEP) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and are focused on educating people who visit Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument about how to “Honor the Land” by minimizing their impact at trailheads and along popular trails on the Monument.
Those interested in becoming a Trail Ambassador will need to complete an online training that takes between 1.5 and 2 hours before they can come out into the field for an in-person training event. All of the information you need about the online training will be sent to you once you sign up to be a Trail Ambassador at the link below. Our first round of Trail Ambassador in-person training events will be April 2nd, 3rd,16th, 17th, and 18th, and May 7th and 8th and will take place at the Lower Calf Creek Falls Trailhead.
