Shortly after the President’s proclamation to shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante, Utah Representative Chris Stewart introduced H.R. 4558 which is a “Grand Staircase Giveaway” by groups who have studied it in depth. It codifies the President’s proclamation, transfers federal land to the State of Utah and creates a “National Park” that not even the National Park Conservation Association supports, because the National Park Service wouldn’t be involved in the management of these lands at all. Learn more below.
For Utahns in the Second District: a few weeks ago, Stewart mailed a survey to everyone in his district asking for opinions on his “Grand Staircase Giveaway,” HR 4558. If you live in Utah’s Second District, we encourage you to contact Rep. Stewart’s office in Salt Lake (801-364-5550) or in Washington D.C. (202-225-9730) and respond to the survey questions:
1. Do you support designating Escalante Canyons as Utah’s sixth national park?
2. Have you been to all five of Utah’s “Mighty Five” national parks?
3. Do you support protecting Utahns’ access to public lands in Utah?
You can also mail them with your own comments to: U.S Congressman Chris Stewart, 323 Cannon House Office Bldg, Washington DC 20515. Even though the survey seems to be intended solely for his constituents, anyone can send him their thoughts on the matter.
